Biography & Legacy
Anthropologist, Researcher, Writer, and Educator dedicated to African development.

Dr. Achola O. Pala is an Anthropologist, Researcher, Writer, and Educator whose rich professional experience encompasses a long career spanning research, community building, civil society engagement, and international policy.
Pioneering Research & Advocacy
As a Research Fellow at the University of Nairobi's Institute for Development Studies, she pioneered ground-breaking studies on women's land rights. Her work highlighted the critical role of women in food agriculture and advocated for policy reforms to ensure women's control of land and access to credit for sustainable food security.
As a leader in the Kenyan women's movement, she played a vital role in establishing the Women's Bureau (now the Gender Ministry) to advocate for national policy responses to women's concerns.
Scientific Leadership at ICIPE
During her 5-year tenure as Principal Research Scientist at the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE), Dr. Pala led an interdisciplinary team to integrate socio-economic issues into core biological research. She established the Social Interface Research Unit, focusing on the management of insect pests, animal disease vectors, and biodiversity conservation from a socio-economic perspective.
International Policy at the United Nations
As Chief of the Africa Section at UNIFEM (now UN Women), she managed gender experts and a large portfolio of empowerment projects across 40 African countries. Her work covered food security, regional integration, and gender equality legislation. Notably, she coordinated relations with Rome-based food and agriculture organisations (FAO, IFAD, WFP) from 1991-1997.
She led the Africa Team at the 1995 Beijing Fourth World Conference, presenting "The Peace Torch"—an initiative inspired by Julius Nyerere's Mwenge, which galvanised women-led peace networks across the continent.
As Senior Policy Advisor on Governance, she developed UNIFEM's global strategy for supporting women in politics and peace, co-organising international conferences for women parliamentarians. Later, at the UNDP Africa Bureau, she led gender mainstreaming and managed regional projects in HIV/AIDS, environment, and food security.
Global Network & Community Engagement
Dr. Pala is a Founder Member of the Association of African Women for Research and Development (AAWORD) and a founding member and sponsor of the Huairou Commission. She has served on numerous national and international boards, including the UN Research Institute for Social Development and Kenyatta National Hospital.
Currently, she serves as a member of the Advisory Group for the Governor of Kisumu County and continues to give back through NyiSango NGO (Sisters of the Lake). Her work with NyiSango focuses on community health and support for widows and orphaned children, a passion rooted in her childhood in western Kenya.
